At ~1,740 meters, Stepantsminda is the base for Georgia's most photographed church: Gergeti Trinity, perched above town with Mount Kazbek behind.
The Georgian Military Highway from Tbilisi is half the experience — stops at Ananuri fortress and Gudauri viewpoints. Hike or 4x4 up to Gergeti in half a day.
Visit May–October for clear summit views. Winter brings ski options at Gudauri. Khinkali and qvevri wine reward après-hike appetites.
